Thato Masera
Thato Masera’s journey began on dusty construction sites in Polokwane where every brick he laid was a step closer to his dream. With no resources but plenty of determination he saved what little he earned to buy art materials he could not afford. That humble beginning became the foundation of a remarkable creative path.
Thato started building his name in the towns of Giyani and Phalaborwa moving between communities sharing his passion and selling his work face to face. He carried his canvases across regions like stories waiting to be told drawing inspiration from African culture heritage landscapes animals and the people around him.
Driven by a deep desire to grow he later moved to Midrand to take his artistry further. There he refined his craft with a fire in his heart and the belief that his dreams were valid. Thato draws inspiration from South African greats like Nelson Makamo Greatjoy Ndlovu and William Kentridge artists whose courage and excellence fuel his vision of becoming one of the greats in his own right.
His work has not gone unnoticed. Thato Masera was featured in Review Polokwane Observer in 2019 and again in Midrand Reporter in 2023 a testament to the growing impact of his work and his voice as an artist rooted in authenticity and resilience.
From scaffolding to studio from rural roads to gallery walls Thato Masera paints with the soul of a builder constructing not just art but legacy.
